The Dean S. Luce Elementary School in Canton currently has a “5 out of 10” rating on GreatSchools.org and that’s concerning. The Lieutenant Peter M. Hanson Elementary School currently has a “9 out of 10” rating and the John F. Kennedy Elementary School currently has a “10 out of 10” rating. The problem is that GreatSchools.org is the first result on the first page of Bing when “canton ma school ratings” is searched.[mappress mapid=”35″ width=”100%”]
I’m currently listing a single family property at 90 Lawrence Street, Canton and I have a buyer that seems extremely interested in the property but they raised the objection of the “5 out of 10” rating on GreatSchools.org this morning. I don’t blame them. They’re a young couple and they will probably send their child to the Luce Elementary School if they buy 90 Lawrence Street.
The seller of 90 Lawrence Street has a high opinion of the Luce Elementary School. Many of the Canton real estate agents that I’ve spoken with through the course of my involvement with 90 Lawrence Street also have a high opinion of the Luce Elementary School. So what did I do?
I called the Luce Elementary School today and spoke with a woman who gave me some basic information about the demographics but I wasn’t fully satisfied with her answer. I don’t blame her for not being fully expansive with me on the accomplishments and challenges associated with the Luce Elementary School.
- It was a Monday morning and she was probably extremely busy.
- I briefly introduced myself and my purpose for calling but she otherwise had no idea who I was.
- It was probably an odd call for her to have received since she probably doesn’t receive many calls from real estate brokers.
- Giving specifics examples of why the school is a good school may offend some people.
I decided not to press for more information than she was willing to share.
I did some more searching on Bing and I found a site called SchoolGrades.org and it gives the Dean S. Luce Elementary School an “A”. How can one site give the Luce Elementary School a “5 out of 10” rating but another site give it an “A” grade? I’m sure their methodologies are different. Here’s the link to “The GreatSchools Rating” page and here’s the link to the SchoolGrades.org “Our Grades” page.
I did more Binging because I wanted more anecdotal evidence that the Luce Elementary School is a superior elementary school. Wicked Local Canton ran a story on June 21st, 2015 entitled “Canton student earns top honors in statewide anti-tobacco poster contest“. The Canton Citizen ran a story on July 23rd, 2015 entitled “MAC: Good News for Canton Schools” and another story on December 21st, 2015 entitled “BOS chair voices support for full-day K“. Wicked Local Canton ran a story on January 29th, 2016 entitled “Canton selectman plan busy Tuesday night” wherein there is a vote on the docket to approve a “Luce 5K & Fun Run” on May 22nd, 2016. The Canton Association of Parents and Teachers (CAPT) are the promoters of the “Luce 5K & Fun Run” and, in my opinion, the initiative shows that the community at the Luce Elementary School is active and that is always a good sign.
My opinion is that prospective buyers should always do their own research but I, admittedly, provided the initial source of information and opinion regarding the Luce Elementary School to those buyers. I promoted the Luce Elementary School in my marketing but now I have to fight GreatSchools.org. I think that I’ve effectively fought GreatSchools.org by using SchoolGrades.org and anecdotal evidence of a positive environment for Canton students by providing links to news stories that pertain to the Luce Elementary School.
Buyers and tenants don’t always have time to do their own research because they lead busy lives so they rely on real estate agents and brokers for that information but my advice to them would be to directly contact the schools in the districts that they’re interested in moving. Make a quick call. Ask questions. Visit the school. Get involved. In this case, the Luce Elementary School has its own site and the link is here.
Maybe we can, together, push that “5 out of 10” rating out of the first position on the first page of Bing if enough of us read and comment on this post? A more rounded view of the Luce Elementary School would help potential buyers and tenants make a more informed decision on moving to the area of Canton serviced by the Luce Elementary School.
